Lisandro Martinez Season-Ending Injury: Impact on Manchester United’s FA Cup Prospects
Lisandro Martinez injury has dealt Manchester United a major setback ahead of their FA Cup fourth-round clash against Leicester City. The Argentine centre-back sustained a cruciate knee ligament injury during United’s 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace. Reports confirm that Lisandro Martinez’s injury could sideline him for up to nine months, delivering a significant blow to Manchester United’s defensive stability.
This injury continues a worrying trend for Martinez, who has been plagued by fitness issues since joining United. Since the 2022/23 season, he has missed over 50 matches due to injuries, including two metatarsal fractures and a medial collateral ligament issue.

The 27-year-old was visibly distressed as he was stretchered off at Old Trafford, with initial fears of another long-term setback now confirmed. His absence comes at a crucial time, as United struggle for consistency under Ruben Amorim, their newly appointed head coach.
United’s defensive crisis deepens with Luke Shaw being the only other left-footed centre-back in the squad. However, Shaw has not played since December 1 and is still undergoing a managed return to fitness. Manager Ruben Amorim addressed the situation after Sunday’s defeat, stating:
“Licha is really important for us, not just as a football player, but as a character, especially in this hard moment. Now it’s time to help Licha like he’s done for so long.”
The lack of defensive depth raises concerns about United’s ability to cope with high-intensity fixtures, particularly against attacking sides like Leicester City.
Leicester City, currently battling relegation in the Premier League, will view this FA Cup tie as a golden opportunity. Managed by club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, the Foxes will hope to capitalize on United’s defensive instability.

Van Nistelrooy previously masterminded a victory over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, when he served as their caretaker manager before taking over at Leicester. With United in crisis mode, Leicester will be eager to exploit their weaknesses and progress further in the FA Cup.
With the FA Cup fixture approaching, Ruben Amorim faces a tactical dilemma. Will he rush Luke Shaw back into the lineup, or does he need an emergency signing before the transfer window closes? One thing is certain—Manchester United’s FA Cup hopes have taken a massive hit with Lisandro Martinez’s injury.
