Manchester United Stage Thrilling Comeback Against Real Sociedad as Fernandes Shines

United Fight Back to Keep European Dream Alive

Even in a week where Old Trafford’s future came under scrutiny, Manchester United proved there’s still plenty of fight left in them. Trailing against Real Sociedad, they looked on the brink of elimination, their European hopes hanging by a thread. But on a pulsating night in Manchester, United roared back to life, overturning a deficit to claim a 3-1 victory and advance to the Europa League quarter-finals.

At the heart of it all? Bruno Fernandes. The captain put in a masterclass performance, netting a hat-trick to break multiple Europa League records and inspire his team to yet another dramatic comeback. If United are to go all the way to Bilbao for the final in May, Fernandes will be the man leading the charge.

Fernandes: United’s Captain, Leader, Savior

There have been times this season when Bruno Fernandes has seemed like a one-man rescue mission, carrying United through difficult spells. This was another one of those nights.

With his side trailing early, Fernandes calmly converted two penalties before sealing his hat-trick with a well-taken finish from Alejandro Garnacho’s pass. That goal made him the first United player to score a Europa League knockout stage hat-trick, cementing his status as one of the competition’s all-time greats.

“He is a perfect captain for our team,” said United boss Ruben Amorim after the game. “When we need him, he is always there.”

Penalty Drama and United’s Fighting Spirit

This was a game filled with controversy, drama, and relentless attacking football. It featured three penalties—and a fourth that was awarded but later overturned.

Sociedad struck first after Matthijs de Ligt clattered into Mikel Oyarzabal inside the box. A lengthy VAR review saw the referee point to the spot, and Oyarzabal made no mistake, sending Andre Onana the wrong way.

United responded almost instantly. Rasmus Hojlund, who worked tirelessly all night, was brought down by Igor Zubeldia inside the area. Fernandes stepped up and coolly dispatched his first penalty, leveling the score within six minutes.

His second penalty came after Patrick Dorgu was tripped by Aritz Elustondo. Again, Fernandes sent Sociedad keeper Alex Remiro the wrong way, putting United in front.

There was almost a third spot-kick, when Dorgu appeared to be fouled by Hamari Traore, but in a rare moment of sportsmanship, the young wing-back told the referee there was no contact, leading to the decision being overturned. “It is the right thing to do, so I am quite proud of him,” Amorim said after the game.

But Fernandes wouldn’t be denied his hat-trick. Moments later, Alejandro Garnacho slipped a pass into the box, and Fernandes angled a clinical finish into the bottom corner to put the game beyond Sociedad’s reach.

Amorim’s United Find Their Rhythm

This was one of United’s best attacking displays under Ruben Amorim, a sign that his high-energy, front-foot football is starting to take shape.

The recalled Rasmus Hojlund was a handful all night, stretching Sociedad’s defense and coming close to ending his recent goal drought. He combined well with Joshua Zirkzee, whose movement and link-up play continue to improve, even if he was frustrated in front of goal.

Dorgu, playing as a wing-back, was another standout performer. The 19-year-old, who saw red the last time he played at Old Trafford, flipped the script this time, winning a penalty and causing havoc with his pace.

Amorim praised the shift in attitude after United’s cautious display against Arsenal over the weekend. “Our exhibition against Arsenal was not beautiful but helped us a lot,” he admitted. “This was much better. A more aggressive, attacking approach.”

What’s Next? A Quarter-Final Clash with Lyon

With the win, United advance to the Europa League quarter-finals, where they’ll face Lyon in the next round. They are now the only unbeaten team left in the competition, and with Fernandes in red-hot form, belief is growing that they can go all the way.

For a club that has endured plenty of turmoil this season, this was a reminder of the magic Old Trafford can still produce.

“We deal with the problems of the present, and we show the future,” Amorim said. “This was a really good night for everybody at the club.”
